It's an honor to introduce the brand new Ciclismo Classico Women's Cycling Festival which will take place at Longfellow Health Club in Wayland, MA. Join us for great rides, delicious local food and lectures and hands-on cycling seminars presented by women cycling experts.

20 years ago I founded Ciclismo Classico to celebrate the best in bicycle touring; the Women's Cycling Festival will be a celebration by women for women in honor of women's growing passion for the sport that I have made my life. In addition to being an excellent lifetime sport, cycling has some wonderful “feminine” qualities such as its ability to gently connect us with nature, beauty, culture, our own souls. The women’s cycling DAY is about taking back the EXPERIENCE of cycling and putting women’s specific needs and passions as a priority.

At the Women’s Cycling Day, women’s specific cycling needs, interests will be addressed through comradery, rides and a variety of CLINICS and rides throughout the day

Get hands on opportunities to learn about nutrition, bike mechanics, and training for peak performance or your first charity ride! Then Clip In for bike handling lessons and a group ride. Make new friends with other women with similar interests or bring your family to start creating powerful bonds with your kids (and/or spouse.)

Warm camaraderie among peers, between mentors and beginners, making new friends and meeting new riding buddies, these are the sorts of chances often lost in the new cyber world. The Ciclismo Classico Women's Cycling Festival brings them to the front of the peloton. Over 200 women riders of all ages, leading healthy lifestyles, motivated to help themselves and others, this is the community that you will join when you attend the Festival.

Susan Herman 1942-2009

"Susan passed away peacefully at 5:06am on June 24th. We find comfort in knowing her pain is replaced with our mourning."

My family just returned from a wonderfully inspirational memorial service in Keene, NH where we surrounded by Susan's husband Gary (pictured above with the beard), her large family and friends including my fellow "Interlocken" Crossroads guides (pictured above). Because of Susan our paths are now forever joined. Thank you Susan and Gary.

In a beautiful service that Susan herself planned, we listened to Mozart, sang and cried together. Eulogies by her children and mentors spoke lovingly of a woman of strong convictions, a loving heart, profound spirituality and a constant yearning to learn and share with others.

Susan Jane (Goldsmith) Herman of Fairbanks, Alaska passed away June 24, 2009 after an illness of pancreatic cancer. She is survived by her husband, Gary Kofinas, her three children Melissa, Thomas, and Sarah, her five spectacular grandchildren Tia, Felix, Simon, Miriam, and Joshua, and her three sisters Ellen Switkes, Marjie Crosby, and Barbara Virchick. Susan inspired many through her service as a parent, teacher, leader, volunteer, and scholar. She was Professor of Management at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Professor Emerita at Keene State College in Keene, NH, and cofounder of Interlocken Center for Experiential Learning (now Windsor Mountain International).


The Susan J. Herman Leadership Award
in Holocaust and Genocide Awareness

Keene State College's Cohen Center for Holocaust Studies is pleased to announce the establishment of the Susan J. Herman Award for Leadership in Holocaust & Genocide Awareness.

This award honors the work and inspiration of Dr. Susan J. Herman, Professor of Management at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Professor Emerita of Management at Keene State College. Dr. Herman has served the College, the Cohen Center and the states of New Hampshire and Alaska through a lifetime of advocacy, education, curriculum development and leadership training. Dr. Herman's considerable talents helped to motivate College leaders, faculty and community supporters to join in
promoting Holocaust and genocide studies, leading many to a greater awareness of how genocide, mass murder and other crimes of atrocity affect us all today.

The Susan J. Herman Award, which will be permanently endowed, will be used to recognize individuals who have, through personal leadership and actions, stimulated greater understanding of genocide, increased activism on behalf of the victims of crimes against humanity or inspired community engagement in educating people about genocide both historically and in our contemporary world. The Herman Award will be presented in two categories each year. One recognition award will honor a student at Keene State College, accompanied by a monetary award to assist the student with his or her studies. The second will be awarded to an individual or group who has/have made a difference in Holocaust and genocide awareness through acts of leadership and personal commitment. Preference for the second award will be given to qualified nominees from New Hampshire, but inspirational candidates from around the world will be considered. Anyone who would like to honor Dr. Herman or to support this unique leadership award is invited to make a gift to the endowment. This will help to ensure that both students and community members continue to be recognized for their leadership in making our world a better place for all.

Hardy School Celebrates Walk Bike to School Month

The Hardy Kids GREEN bike/walk calendars for the month of May were submitted and tallied on June 6th. We celebrated in the playground today by raffling off over $500 in prizes from Wheelworks, Quad Bicycles, ATA bicycles and Ciclismo Classico. Special Guest Bobby Mac, our very own cycling icon was there to offer congratulatory words to the kids (and let them lift his bike)

The final results are in! Here is what the kids biked and walked during the month of May:

TOTAL # OF Kids that participated: 94
TOTAL # of miles walked: 1223
TOTAL # of miles biked: 79.6
Farthest Total distance: 35.2
Number of Kids that walked/biked every day: 14
Average distance walked/biked: .4 miles
Average # of days walked/biked: 18 ( out of 24)
Farthest one way distance walked/biked: .8 miles

Multiply the monthly distance X 5 the five months of the year when the weather is fine for walking/biking and the total is: 6510 miles, enough to cross the USA twice!

Dedicating my 2009 Pan Mass Challenge Ride to Susan Herman and My Mom

2009 has been a tough year for so many. We feel stretched, challenged and anxious but as the saying goes, this too shall pass. We know next year will be better. We WILL survive and thrive as a result. Our futures will be brighter and full of life.

While never giving up hope, cancer patients and their families are often not so lucky. Every day carries the mental and physical burden of a “recession,” every day they and their families feel anxious, stretched and challenged. Although most cancer patients I have met have incredible optimism, they also must try to live and thrive with the painful reality of this life threatening disease.

In the past month I learned that a friend, world shaker and change maker Susan Herman’s incredible life journey will be cut short by pancreatic cancer that is speeding painfully through her body. Susan is an incredible woman, scholar and teacher who has had a profound impact on my life and thousands pf others. Years ago, Susan and her family brought and wove me into the Camp Interlocken bubble and with their support and wisdom I began my career as a bike tour guide for teenagers. This experience in the “bubble” continues to inspire my passion for experiential learning. Her soulful impact has touched so many who are now praying for her daily. In honor of her work, Keene State College's Cohen Center for Holocaust Studies recently announced the establishment of the Susan J. Herman Award for Leadership in Holocaust & Genocide Awareness. Susan has served the College, the Cohen Center and New Hampshire through a lifetime of advocacy, education, curriculum development and leadership training.

Susan is also the remarkable mother of three and grandmother of five and, as a daughter and a mother with young children whose memories of “nana” are fading, I share in the deep sadness they now all feel to have a parent dying from cancer. May 21st would have been my mom’s 76th birthday, we would have gone out to dinner and she would have indulged in cheesecake with a single candle. With the arrival of mother’s day and our birthdays, I remember that May was our month and will always be. She loved the smell of lilacs, the glow of forsythia and simply getting out to take a walk. This time of year is a colorful, yet a sad reminder of mom as we all continue to miss her deeply. The PMC is one way I keep her spirit alive.

As I approach my mom’s fifth year memorial and follow Susan’s cancer journal on her Carebridge Website my heart opens and inspires me to take action in my own small way for our loved ones who have had their lives cut short by cancer. Pan Mass Challlenge riders, volunteers and sponsors are all an expression of Susan’s vision that we take action in small yet significant ways to make the world better rather than be passive observers. While my PMC contribution often feels insignificant and I wish I could do more, I know that change usually happens by taking lots of small steps (or pedal strokes). Collectively we PMCers are making a difference in battle to end cancer, won’t you help by supporting my 2009 ride?

Every year since 1990 I have ridden in the PMC, a 192-mile cancer fundraiser from Sturbridge to Provincetown that to date has raised 145 million dollars making it the largest single contributor to the Jimmy Fund. 100% of all funds raised by PMC riders in 2008 (an extraordinary 35 million in one year!) went directly to the Jimmy Fund making it the leanest and most efficient fundraising operation in the nation today.

While the ride itself is long and tiring, it is a walk in the park compared to the grueling journey cancer patients endure.

I thank you for your support and ask that you PLEASE donate to my 09 PMC ride to Susan, Val and your loved ones who are suffering or were taken too soon by this terrible disease. In the midst of darkness, the PMC is a powerful Ray of Hope for all cancer victims and their families. There are many fundraisers to choose from but few have been going strong for 30 years like the PMC. As you know I am not a fickle participant either! Since 1991 I have raised almost $92,000 and ridden over 4,500 miles for the PMC.

I ask for your support with a minimum pledge of $50 (any amount is welcome!).
